2002 Denmark Silver Proof Euro Trial Coin Set - 9 Coins

The coins that the Danish Royal Mint don't want you to see!

These trial coins were put together using offical illustrations from Denmark's National Bank. It was antipated that this is what the Danish euros would look like and features 9 pattern euro coins all struck to a silver proof finish.

The iconic mermaid of Copenhagen is shown on the 5 cent, 2 cent and 1 cent pieces. A set of scales design is shown on the reverse along with the 12 stars.

A proud viking ship is shown on the bimetallic 1 euro and 2 euro. On the obverse is the image of the queen, Margrethe II.

Dove in flight with branch of peace on the reverse of the 50 cent, 20 cent and 10 cent.

The 5 euro features a female figure with the arms of Denmark in her left hand and ribboned wreath in her right hand. A dove of peace flies overhead as a tall ship sails the sea alongside.

Denmark and the Euro

There was a referendum in Denmark in 2000 on joining the Eurozone and adopting the Euro but it was defeated and they decided to stick with the Krone. If the bill would have gone ahead then the Euro would have been introduced as an accounting unit in 2002 and physical coins and notes in 2004.

At the request of the Danish government, Denmark's National Bank prepared illustrations for the designs and this was published in 2000.

Pattern Euros

This set was produced by the International Numismatic Agency according to illustrations provided by Denmark's National Bank. It shows, as the wording states in the leaflet 'that when Denmark adopts the Euro it can still retain a fine coin series.' The adoption of the Euro is controversial in Denmark with differing political parties wishing still to adopt the Euro.

The new reverse designs were chosen to represent commerce, peace and justice. They were proposed to the European Commission as a replacement for Luc Luycx's maps of Europe.
