Finnish Euro Pattern Coin Set featuring eight coins plus a medallion. The set was issued to celebrate Finland joining the Euro in 2002.
This pattern set feature 1 cent and 2 cent coins. Finland has issued very limited quantities of 1 and 2 cent coins for circulation due to the cost of producing the coins, making them sought after.
On new year's day 2002, Finland, like the other 11 members of the Eurozone, started using Euro notes and Euro coins for cash transactions. Within a few months, the old coins and banknotes in Markaas have been withdrawn. Finland chose three designs based upon motifs similar to those used on national coins.
The Finnish mint decided that 1 and 2 cent coins were too low of a value to issue, so have adopted the 'Swedish rounding system'. Prices are rounded up or down to the nearest 5 cents. The 1 and 2 cent coins have been removed from circulation due to the cost of production being higher than the value of the coins.
The 1 and 2 cent coins are still issued as part of coin sets, as legally required. Shops are not obliged to accept the coins.
