The 2002 Golden Jubilee 3-Coin Set comprises of 3 wonderfully designed piedfort five pound coins, each celebrating the rule of Queen Elizabeth II.
These five pound coins were issued on behalf of the channel islands of Guernsey, Jersey and Alderney, with each coin having a certificate of authenticity stating the issue number out of a limit of 100.
Each coin measures 38.61mm and is struck from 22 carat (916.7) fine gold. The coins come displayed in a presentation box.
These coins have a combined gold content of 7.06 troy ounces.
First struck to present to those favourable to the King, the French origins of Piedfort coins reveals the term to mean "heavy measure", appropriate given that Piedfort coins are typically found to be double the thickness and weight of their proof counterparts.
The obverse of the Alderney gold proof piedfort five pound coin bears the third portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, designed by Raphael Maklouf; whereas both the coins issued on behalf of Jersey and Guernsey feature Queen Elizabeth II's fourth portrait, designed by Ian Rank-Broadley.
The reverse of the golden jubilee Guernsey gold proof piedfort five pound, "coach and cavalry" coin wonderfully captures the ceremonial route of Queen Elizabeth II's Coronation in 1953, depicting the golden state coach used in each Coronation since 1831.
The reverse design of the Jersey, "Abbey Procession" gold proof piedfort five pound coin shows the grandeur and opulence of the royal procession as it entered Westminster Abbey. Presenting the Yeomen of the Guard alongside the Maids of Honour as they carry the Queen's train.
Perhaps a familiar sight to numismatists' and collectors of British coinage, Alderney's "Head of State", gold proof piedfort five pound coin shows the Royal arms set behind the Great Sword of State; symbolic of the devotion to duty the monarch has shown throughout her time on the throne.
