The iconic Australian mamal is found throughtout Australia and are adored by the world. There are estimated to be over 40 million kangaroos in Australia!
An adult male Kangaroo is called a Buck or Boomer, a female adult a Doe and a baby kangaroo a Joey. They are the largest species in the Macropod family.
Until 1990 the coins featured famous gold nuggets found in Australia on the reverse and were referred to as 'nuggets'. From 1990 onwards the design changed to feature a kangaroo instead. For this reason, the coins may be called nuggets, kangaroos or 'roos. They have also featured other species of the macropod family too; Wallabies and Wallaroos!
The fourth portrait of HM Queen Elizabeth II was designed by Ian Rank-Broadley and is featured on this obverse.The coin bears an inscription that reads as:
