Each year since 1980, the Royal Mint have produced sets of 3 and 4 coins in the gold soveriegn series. The 3 coin sets consist of a sovereign, half sovereign and double sovereign or two pound piece.
In 2001, the issue limit for the three coin sovereign set was only 1,500. The issue limits for 2002 were increased considerably to 5,000 because of the Golden Jubilee celebrations. For 2004 the issue limit was reduced to 2,500.
The obverse shows the fourth definitive UK coin portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Ian Rank-Broadley, his initials IRB are below the truncated neck. This effigy appeared on coins from 1998 until 2015.
In previous years the 3 coin and 4 coin sovereign collections have usually contained all coins of the same design, however in a number of years, the two pound coin included with the sets has been the commemorative version instead.
The 2004 three coin sets contain the Steam Engine commemorative two pound, while the sovereign and half sovereigns feature the traditional St. George and dragon design by Benedetto Pistrucci.
The four coin set contains the St. George and Dragon version of the double sovereign.
