The Austrian Mint in Vienna followed suit from the Royal Canadian Mint, South Africa Mint and Royal Mint, minting its first 1oz gold bullion coin in 1989. After five years the first 0.5 ounce gold Philharmonic was released and has been a popular way for European investors to invest in fractional gold.
Its design celebrates the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, considered by many to be the finest in the world, hence the name The Vienna Philharmonic coin, more commonly known as The Philharmonic or Philharmoniker, and sometimes shortened to Phil(s).
Thomas Pesendorfer, previously the chief engraver of the Austrian Mint, is responsible for the design of both the obverse and reverse of the coin.
The obverse shows the Great Organ of the Golden Hall in Vienna’s concert hall, the Musikverein, along with the following inscription:
REPUBLIK OSTERREICH 1/2 UNZE GOLD 999.9 2008 50 EURO
'Republik Osterreich' translates to 'Republic of Austria'.
The reverse depicts a selection of instruments, including the cello, violin, harp, Vienna horn and bassoon. Inscribed are the words:
WIENER PHILHARMONIKER
