2012 London Olympic Games "Faster, Higher, Stronger" 9-Coin Gold Proof Set.
This is the complete Olympic Gold Series Collection by The Royal Mint. The set celebrates the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games and features coins dated from 2010 - 2012. These are the only UK coins to feature the official Olympic Rings.
The reverse of these London 2012 coins was designed by renowned sculptor, John Bergdahl. Designs for the three £100 one-ounce and six £25 quarter-ounce coins are inspired by the Olympic motto ‘Citius, Altius, Fortius’, Latin for 'Faster, Higher, Stronger'.
Each coin in set is struck to a proof finish from 22 carat gold. The complete set contains 4.5 troy ounces of the precious metal. The set comes in a walnut-veneer case with full-colour booklets.
Only 1,000 of these sets were issued.
The 2012 Summer Olympics began on 27th July 2012. It was the third time the summer games were held in London. Team GB finished 3rd in the table, with 65 total medals (including 29 gold).
The obverse of all of the coins features the Ian Rank-Broadley portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. This is the fourth coinage portrait to be used on UK coins.
These coins were issued over three years. The Neptune, Mercury and Diana coins feature '2010' on the obverse, Apollo, Juno and Jupiter feature '2011' and Vulcan, Minerva and Mars all feature '2012'.
The reverse of the coins was designed by John Bergdahl. They are inspired by the Olympic motto ‘Citius, Altius, Fortius’, Latin for Faster, Higher, Stronger.
