2012 Australian Year of the Dragon half ounce silver coin is struck in 999 pure silver fineness containing 0.5 troy ounces of silver. The coin celebrates the Chinese Zodiac symbol of the Dragon in the Lunar Series II collection.
The coin comes in a clear capsule to keep the coin struck to the highest standard.
The Chinese year 4709, the Year of the Dragon, started on the January 23rd 2012. Following the success of the gold versions which started in 1996, in 1999, Australia issued the first silver Chinese Lunar Year series of bullion coins. These Second Series silver bullion coins are struck to a high quality with a frosted and polished uncirculated finish. A variety of sizes were issued from half ounce to ten kilo, each coin comes in a capsule which protects the coin.
The 2012 Australian Lunar Calendar coins were released on the 1st September 2011.
The obverse bears the fourth coin portrait of Elizabeth II by Ian Rank-Broadley. The coin bears the inscription ELIZABETH II AUSTRALIA 1/2oz 999 SILVER 2012 50 CENTS
The reverse bears an intricate engraving of a dragon with the pearl of wisdom, the legend Year of the Dragon and the Chinese symbol for the Year of the Dragon.
