In 2015, The Royal Mint produced the UK's first £100 coin, featuring Big Ben. The coin is silver and contains two troy ounces. Upon their release, in January, 2015, the coins sold out very quickly at The Royal Mint. This coin comes in a presentation pack.
Although the clock tower is often referred to as 'Big Ben', it is actually the nickname of the bell inside the tower. It is possibly named after Sir Benjamin Hall, First Commissioner for Works 1855-1858.
The original bell was made in 1856, but cracked soon after. A replacement bell was cast in 1858, however that too cracked. In order to solve the problem, a lighter hammer was used to strike the bell. Did you know that the bell strikes an 'E' note?
The bell chimes in times of celebration (New Year) and mourning (Remembrance Day), uniting the nation. During World War I, the bell was silenced and the face darkened for two years.
The tower was renamed the Elizabeth Tower in 2012, to celebrate Queen Elizabeth's Diamond Jubilee.
Ian Rank-Broadleys portrait of the Queen is on the obverse.
The coin features the Elizabeth Tower, which houses Big Ben, on the reverse. It was designed by Royal Mint engravers Glyn Davies and Laura Clancy.
