The Royal Mint produced the UK's second £100 coin in 2015. The silver coin features Buckingham Palace and is the first £100 to feature the fifth portrait of the Queen on the obverse. The first £100, the Big Ben coin, sold out in just eleven days at The Royal Mint!
The palace started out as a private residence for the Duke of Buckingham. It was built in 1703 and stayed within his family for over 150 years. In 1761, the building was bought by King George III as a home for his wife, Queen Charlotte.
Over the years the palace has gone through a lot of changes. In the 19th century three wings were added to it in order to form the courtyard as it's known today. The east front was added at the start of the 20th century and features the well-known balcony.
Queen Victoria was the first monarch to make Buckingham Palace her primary residence when she moved in, in 1837.
The obverse features the new, fifth portrait of the Queen by artist Jody Clark.
The reverse of the coin features the Victoria Memorial, with Buckingham Palace in the background. It was designed by artists, Glyn Davies and Laura Clancy.
