These 2016 Gold 1/4 oz Year of the Monkey Lunar Bullion Coins represent the third release in The Royal Mint's Shēngxiào Collection, which celebrate the 9th animal in the Chinese Zodiac.
Please note: these coins may have red spots.
The Year of the Monkey coin is the third in the series of Royal Mint lunar coins. Possibly influenced by the success of the Perth Mint's lunar series, the Royal Mint started producing their own lunar coins in 2014, with the Year of the Horse. Available in both gold and silver versions, the coins have proved to be a quite popular with both investors and collectors.
The number 8 is considered to be lucky in Chinese culture. The Year of the Monkey officially starts on February 8th, 2016, or the Chinese year 4714. The monkey is the 9th animal in the lunar cycle. People born in the Year of the Monkey are said to be intelligent, ambitious and adventurous. They can, however, have a mischievous side.
The obverse shows the Jody Clark fifth portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. This is the first coin in the series to have the new portrait.
The reverse of the coin was designed by the British artist, Wuon-Gean Ho. Taking inspiration from her Chinese and British descent, the coin features a playful monkey on the reverse. It is meant to symbolise the freedom, mischief and adventure of monkeys.
The inscription of this coin reads as the following:
