These 2016 Gold 1/2 oz Britannia Bullion Coins feature the late Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse, and the 'Standing Britannia' design by Phillip Nathan on the reverse.
Gold Britannia coins were first issued in 1987 as a British alternative to popular bullion coins such as Krugerrands and Maples. In one ounce, half ounce, quarter ounce, and tenth ounce sizes, the new Britannia bullion coins had a face value of £100, £50, £25, and £10 each respectively.
Fractional ounce gold coins typically offer higher premiums than the full one ounce gold coins, due to the 1oz coins being so popular as an investment gold product. Few bullion houses deal with fractional ounce coins due to the fact that smaller coins tend to be bought in singles, so do not want the bother of handling small quantities of low value coins.
Wanting to “create a more positive look on the Queen”, Jody created many initial drawings of Elizabeth II, using photos taken of the Queen for sculptures. Taking two weeks to create the submitted design, Jody settled for a “warm expression”, revealing a new side to the regal figure whilst paying homage to her milestone of becoming the longest reigning monarch in British history by showing Elizabeth II adorning her coronation crown.
The obverse bears the fifth definitive UK coin portrait by Jody Clark.
The reverse bears the engraving of Britannia by Philip Nathan with the following inscription:
