This is a 2016 William Shakespeare £50 coin. It was issued to celebrate the 400th anniversary since the birth of the playwright and author. The coin is struck from .999 fine silver and contains one troy ounce of the precious metal.
The coin has an issue limit of 15,000.
In 2016 The Royal Mint issued a series of coins to celebrate the 400th anniversary of the death of William Shakespeare. These include a 5oz silver £10 coin, as well as a 3-coin series of £2 coins celebrating Shakespeares comedies, tragedies and histories.
The obverse of the coin was designed by Jody Clark. It is the fifth coinage portrait of Queen Elizabeth II to be used on UK coinage.
The reverse features two masks; a mask of tragedy and a mask of comedy. It was designed by John Bergdahl.
