The Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II

Princess Elizabeth was formally crowned Queen on 2nd June 1953, 14 months after the death of her father King George VI.

The coronation was the first to be televised and took over a year to prepare. Over 3 million spectators gathered in London's streets to watch the procession with some having camped out overnight.

2018 marked the 65th anniversary of the Queen's Coronation, making her the first British monarch to reach the milestone. Her great-great grandmother reigned for over 63 years.

Modern Sovereigns

The modern sovereign was introduced in 1817 with a nominal value of one pound. The same specifications that were used in 1817 apply to sovereigns issued today.

This gold proof sovereign set is British legal tender and is exempt from Capital Gains Tax. Sovereigns are popular with coin collectors and investors.

Obverse

The fifth coinage portrait of Queen Elizabeth II appears on the obverse of the coin. This was designed by Jody Clark and has appeared on sovereigns since 2015.

ELIZABETH II DEI GRA REGINA FID DEF

Reverse

The reverse design features St George, slaying the dragon. This was designed by Benedetto Pistrucci, and has been used on sovereigns since 1817.

The reverse also includes the addition of a crown mint mark, found to the left of the date. The privy mark commemorates the Sapphire Anniversary (65 years) of the Queen's coronation.

The reverse of the £5 has the mint mark on the right and has Pistrucci on the left.
