This is the third 10oz uncirculated coin in the Royal Mint's Queen's Beasts Bullion Series. This bullion coin features a Dragon on the reverse. Issued in a protective capsule for storage.
The 2017 Red Dragon was the third bullion coin in the Queen's Beast series to be released. The Red Dragon symbolises the Queen's Welsh heritage which can be traced back Owen Tudor, father of Henry VII. Wales is the only country in the world to use the dragon on its national flag. Throughout history, the dragon has been symbolic of the devil, however, the Welsh see this mythical beast as a symbol of strength, victory, wealth and power.
Designed by Jody Clark, the Queen's Beast coin series are based on the ten statues that were commissioned to guard the entrance of Westminster Abbey when Elizabeth II was coronated in 1953. These uncirculated bullion coins are sought after by coin collectors and silver investors.
The Jody Clark portrait of Queen Elizabeth II appears on the obverse of the coin.
The reverse bears an engraving of the Red Dragon of Cadwaladr. The dragon is shown with its wings extended and holding the heraldic shield of the arms of Llewelyn ap Griffith, the last sovereign prince of Wales before the country was defeated by Edward I. The inscription reads:
