This is the 2019 Captain James Cook £2 Coin, celebrating the 250th Anniversary of the Voyage of Discovery. This is the second in a 3-coin series. The first coin was released in 2018 and the final coin will be released in 2020.
This is the Brilliant Uncirculated version of the coin as issued by The Royal Mint.
In 1768, Captain James Cook reached Tahiti on his adventure. He was tasked to observe the Transit of Venus - the movement of the planet as it appears across the face of the sun. By following the movement it was hoped that it could be used to calculate the size of the solar system, which in turn would help nautical navigation.
The Transit of Venus happens twice at 8-year intervals, and then does not occur for around 120 years. This meant that if Cook failed in his observations, all living scientists at the time would be dead by the time the next Transit of Venus happened.
The obverse bears the fifth coin portrait of Elizabeth II by Jody Clark.
The reverse was designed by Gary Breeze, who also designed the other coins in the series. The coin features Cook's famous ship - the HM Bark Endeavour.
Above the ship, the Transit of Venus is portrayed by showing the Venus symbol in front of the sun.
