The D-Day Landings took place on 6th June, 1944. This was a huge invasion by the British, US, Canadian and French armies in Northern France. They bound together to fight the Germans which was a huge turning point in World War II.
The obverse bears the fifth coin portrait of Elizabeth II by Jody Clark.
The design was inspired by military maps and features 5 arrows pointing to the Normandy beach. The arrows read "Utah", "Omaha", "Gold", "Juno" and "Sword" which were the codenames for the five sections of the beach.
It was designed by Stephen Taylor who has also designed the Representation of the People Act 50p, Longest Reigning Monarch £20 and the Sapphire Coronation £5.
