2019 sees the 160th Anniversary of the Birth of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. This Sherlock Holmes 50p coin was issued by The Royal Mint to commemorate the event.
This coin is struck in a proof condition from 0.925 sterling silver.
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was born on 22nd May, 1859. The author is best known for creating Sherlock Holmes. Conan Doyle wrote over 50 stories featuring the detective. In 1893 he killed off Sherlock Holmes so he could have more time to write about other topics. Public outcry led him to bring Homes back to life in The Hounds of the Baskervilles in 1901.
The obverse of the coin is the Jody Clark portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, which was first introduced in 2015.
The reverse was designed by Stephen Raw, a designer and textual artist. The design features a silhoutte of Sherlock Holmes in the centre, with the names of the stories he has appeared in on either side.
