2020 David Bowie Gold Proof Two Ounce Coin
This highly collectible coin is part of The Royal Mint's Music Legend Series. The reverse features a depiction of David Bowie with the iconic lightning bolt in the background. Unlike the rest of the coins in the series, the lightning bolt features a glittering stardust effect.
We only have one of these 2 Ounce Gold Proof Bowie, we have purchased it from a private customer at a large sum over the initial Royal Mint release price in order to get one.
This coin is struck from 999.9 fine gold and contains two troy ounces of the precious metal.
The coin supplied will be the one pictured. It comes beautifully presented in a wooden box, with a booklet and numbered certificate of authenticity from The Royal Mint.
A very limited amount of these were released and have been like stardust to get hold of. They sold out in about 2 minutes of being released with only 100 coins issued. The last 2 ounce gold coin in the Music Legends Series, Elton coin, fetched £15,210 and £11,700 at London Coin Auctions towards the end of 2020 (inc buyers premium).
David Bowie is one of the most influential musicians in modern history. He is best known for his creative style and innovative and constantly evolving music, as well as his alter ego, Ziggy Stardust.
Born David Robert Jones in 1947, Bowie started playing the saxophone at an early age and showed an interest in modern jazz. For his early performances he used the stage name Davie (or Davy) Jones, but changed it to avoid confusion with the actor Davy Jones, who had found success with The Monkees. Bowie chose to name himself after the Bowie knife as 'it cuts both ways'.
Bowie has sold over 100 million records. Some of his best known works include Heroes, Life on Mars, Let's Dance, Changes and his collaboration with Queen on the song Under Pressure. He was also an accomplished actor, with performances in The Prestige, The Man Who Fell to Earth, The Snowman, Zoolander, Extras and 80's cult classic, Labyrinth.
The obverse bears the Jody Clark portrait of Queen Elizabeth II facing right. The text reads:
ELIZABETH II · D · G · REG · F · D · 200 POUNDS
Designed by Jody Clark, the reverse features a left-facing portrait of David Bowie. The iconic lightning bolt appears in the background. Setting this coin apart from others in the commemorative series, the bolt is made up of tiny stars, which give a stardust glitter effect.
The word 'BOWIE' appears at the bottom, with stars in the upper field.
