The End of the Second World War

Even though Victory in Europe was declared on 8th May, 1945, the war still continued in the Far East. The Empire of Japan continued to wage war against the Allies, with the Soviet Union finally declaring war against Japan on the 8th August.

The atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki by the United States finally forced them to surrender. At midnight on 14th August, Prime Minister Clement Attlee announced the news and the nation celebrated with street parties and bonfires. The world could now start to rebuild.

Victory over Japan (VJ) Day is celebrated on 15th August and 2020 marks its 75th anniversary.

Obverse

The obverse of the coin was designed by Jody Clark and features the fifth coinage effigy of Queen Elizabeth II.

ELIZABETH II D G RED FID DEF 5 POUNDS

Reverse

The reverse was designed by Matt Dent and Christian Davies. It shows the words 'WAR' and 'PEACE'. The designers were inspired by inscriptions which are often found on war memorials.

“We felt it was important to treat the characters in such a way that the word ‘peace’ visually dominates ‘war’, conveying a sense that the horror of war has passed and a new era of peace has arrived.”

The text reads:

WAR PEACE

THE END OF THE SECOND WORLD WAR
