The 2020 80th Anniversary of the Battle of Britain 1 oz Gold Proof Coin.
This Jersey coin was issued to commemorate The Battle of Britain, one of the Royal Air Force's greatest victories in WWII.
This gold £5 coin contains one troy of the precious metal. Struck in .999 fine gold, this coin is number 27 of only 80 issued.
The Battle of Britain was an air battle which took place between the fall of France in May 1940 and the cancellation of Operation Sea Lion (the planned invasion of Britain) in October 1940.
The British won the battle through a combination of superior tactics, the advantage of fighting on home-ground, greater aircraft production and of course, the bravery and skill of the RAF servicemen and women themselves. If the Battle of Britain had been won by the Germans, it is commonly perceived that they would have successfully invaded and occupied Britain, and causing Churchill to say after the battle that:
Never in the field of human conflict had so much been owed by so many to so few.
The obverse features Ian Rank-Broadley's image of HM Queen Elizabeth II. The legend reads:
ELIZABETH II BAILIWICK OF JERSEY 2020
The reverse was design by Mike Guilfoyle. It shows three pilots in front of an RAF aeroplane, with the legend reading:
BATTLE OF BRITAIN
