This is the 2020 Peter Pan Gold Proof Fifty Pence Coin.
Issued by The Isle of Man's Pobjoy Mint, this coin was issued to celebrate the 90th Anniversary since author JM Barrie gifted the rights of Peter Pan to Great Ormond Street Hospital.
This collectible coin has a low mintage figure of just 500 coins. Each coin is struck from 22 carat gold (0.916 fineness) and issued to a proof finish.
In 2019, The Isle of Man Treasury, together with Ormond Street Hospital, issued a series of six Peter Pan coins celebrating the 90th Anniversary since author JM Barrie gifted the rights of Peter Pan to the hospital. Due to the success of these coins, the treasury decided to release a second series in 2020.
This Peter Pan and Tinkerbell coin is part of the second colection of coins.
Peter Pan was created by the Scottish novelist James Matthew (JM) Barrie. The mischevious young boy first appeared in the 1902 novel, Little White Bird. It wasn't until the 1904 play, The Boy Who Would Never Grow Up, that the flying boy and his adventures with Tinkerbell, Captain Hook and the Lost Boys, became a firm favourite amongst audiences.
In 1911, Barrie adapted his story into a novel titled Peter and Wendy. Since then, Peter Pan has appeared in numerous films and television shows.
In 1929, Barrie gifted Peter Pan's copyright to Great Ormond Street Hospital so they may benefit from its earnings.
The obverse bears a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Jody Clark. The text reads:
QUEEN ELIZABETH II ISLE OF MAN 2020
The reverse was designed by David Wyatt and Matt Tindall and shows Peter Pan holding a glass, with Tinkerbell on the side. The words 'Do you believe in fairies?' and small stars frame the design.
