UPDATE 26/10/20: Although these coins still remain a bit of a mystery, a supplier has informed us that the coins were likely sold exclusively through a UK-based dealer. Unfortunately that means we're unlikely to stock this coin anytime soon. If you have one to sell, please get in touch.
2020 Una and the Lion Two Kilo Silver Proof Coin.
After the success of the 2019 Una and the Lion coins (which sold out within hours) The Royal Mint are issuing the coin in a two kilo silver proof version.
The Privy Council have announced The Royal Mint will issue this coin in 2020. We do not yet have a release date or prices. Please keep checking back for further information.
See our Una & the Lion collection.
William Wyon designed this now iconic Una and the Lion design. Wyon was chief engraver of The Royal Mint from 1828 until 1851. The design is based on Edmund Spenser's book, The Faerie Queene. Wyon crafted the design entirely by hand and it was first used on gold five pound coins in 1839.
We first heard about the coin after the Privy Council published information about it. The Privy Council is made up of senior politicians who advise the Queen on such matters as bank holidays, coinage and lively company statuses. The Royal Mint have to submit any new coin designs to The Privy Council for approval and that information is then announced on the Privy Council website.
The obverse of the coin will feature the Jody Clark coinage portrait of Queen Elizabeth II.
The Privy Council notice states the reverse will feature:
"a depiction of the figure Una from Edmund Spencer’s The Faerie Queen leading a lion with the inscription “DIRIGE DEUS GRESSUS MEOS” and the date in roman numerals. The coin shall have a grained edge."
