These 2021 The Who - Music Legends 1 oz Silver Proof Coin are issued by The Royal Mint as part of the Music Legends series.
The reverse of the coin features a colourful guitar-shaped pinball machine, adorned by a Union Jack flag. The mod 'The Who' logo appears at the top.
The Who formed in 1964 and became one of the most influential bands of the 20th century. Founding members Roger Daltrey, Pete Townshend and John Entwistle started out as The Detours and were already playing regular gigs around London before changing their name. They soon met drummer Keith Moon who was then part of a band called The Beachcombers. After playing just a few songs with The Who, they offered him the job as their drummer.
The Who found fame with "I Can't Explain" and "My Generation", but are just as well known for their rock operas "Tommy" and "Quadrophenia" which were turned into films in 1975 and 1979, respectively.
Daltrey and Townshend still continue to tour, despite the deaths of Moon and Entwistle and released their 12th album, simply titled "Who".
We first heard about the coin after the Privy Council published information about it. The Privy Council is made up of senior politicians who advise the Queen on such matters as bank holidays, coinage and lively company statuses. The Royal Mint have to submit any new coin designs to The Privy Council for approval and that information is then announced on the Privy Council website.
The obverse features a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Jody Clark. The text reads:
2021 · ELIZABETH II · D · G · REG · F · D · 2 POUNDS ·
Designed by Henry Gray, the design features some of the most iconic symbols of The Who. A Rickenbacker guitar-shaped pinball machine is shown smashing through a speaker. The guitar is adorned by a colourful Union Jack flag. The round mod-style 'The Who' logo appears at the top of the coin.
This coin is the only one of The Who coins to feature a coloured design.
The edge text reads "PINBALL WIZARD"
