These 2022 Alan Turing Gold Proof 50p Coins were issued by the Royal Mint. The coins celebrate the life and legacy of British mathmatician and codebreaker, Alan Turing.
These commemorative coins are struck to a proof finish from 22ct gold (916.7 fineness). Each coin contains 0.4568 troy ounces of the precious metal.
These coins are issued in a presentation box, with a certificate of authenticity from the Royal Mint.
Alan Turing was born in London, England in 1912. During World War II, Turing worked for the British government as part of the top-secret code-breaking department at Bletchley Park in Milton Keynes. He worked with a team to decipher coded military messages between Nazis, known as the Enigma code. During this process he created Victory, an electro-mechanical machine to decode the messages. This machine helped win the war and laid the foundations for modern computing.
Turing already features on the £50 banknote, introduced in 2021.
The obverse features the fifth coinage portrait of the late Queen Elizabeth II, by Jody Clark. The text reads:
· ELIZABETH II ∙ D ∙ G ∙ REG ∙ F ∙ D ∙ 50 PENCE ∙ 2022
The reverse of the coin was designed by Matt Dent and Christian Davies and features the design of a cogwheel with code in the background.
