Gold Britannias

Gold bullion Britannia coins are the UK's most popular CGT exempt 1oz gold coin. Introduced by The Royal Mint in 1987, these British gold bullion coins have a face value of £100. Between 1987 - 2012, the coins were struck in 22 carat gold; from 2013 onwards, the coins have been struck in 24 carat gold. The coins all contain one troy ounce of gold, whether they are struck in 22 carat gold (0.917) or 24 carat gold (0.9999).

What Is PCGS Coin Grading?

In the US PCGS stands for "Professional Coin Grading Service" and is marketed as the "standard for the rare coin industry". Dating back to the 80's it was a recognition that the industry needed a standard approach to grading scores and descriptions. The grading follows the Sheldon framework described below under NGC grading.

MS-70 PCGS Grade

PCGS employs a numeric grading system to concisely depict the condition of a coin without any issues. This internationally recognised scale, established in the 1940s, spans from 1 to 70, encompassing various available numeric grades. As the numeric grade ascends, it indicates an enhanced condition of the coin.

PCGS defines a MS-70/PR-70 grade as:

"Fully struck and lustrous, free of visual marks. The PCGS 70 grading standard does allow for "as minted" defects, as long as those flaws are minor and do not impact the eye appeal of the coin.

Obverse

The obverse of the coin shows the Jody Clark portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. This is the fifth coinage portrait to be used on UK coins.

The text reads:

ELIZABETH II · D · G · REG · F · D · 100 POUNDS

Reverse

The reverse of the coin shows the iconic 'standing Britannia' image by Philip Nathan.

BRITANNIA 2022 1oz 999.9 FINE GOLD

This Royal Mint bullion coin has special security features. These include a small latent image on the bottom-left. Acting as a hologram, it changes between a trident and a padlock, depending on the angle the coin is held.

A small micro-text border can be seen around Britannia. It says "DECUS ET TUTAMEN", which translates to “an ornament and a safeguard".

The field now features surface animation - micro-waves which create lines, showing a pattern in the background. Tincture lines have also been added to show colours and patterns on the metal.
