Queen Elizabeth II passed away peacefully at Balmoral on 8th September 2022. The news broke around 6:30pm BST as messages of condolences from world leaders flooded in.
The state funeral took place at Westminster Abbey on Monday 19th September. She was laid to rest at St. George's Chapel, alongside her late husband, Prince Philip, her parents, King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, and her sister, Princess Margaret.
Upon the death of his mother, the crown automatically passed to Prince Charles, who assumed the title of King Charles III.
The Accession Council proclaimed him king on Saturday 10th September 2022. His coronation will not be held until 2023.
The obverse of this gold proof 50p features the new coinage portrait of King Charles III. Designed by sculptor Martin Jennings, it shows the king facing left. As per numismatic tradition, this is the opposite of Queen Elizabeth II's right-facing portrait.
This effigy replaces Jody Clark's portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, which appeared on UK coins from 2015 - 2022.
The Latin inscription reads:
• CHARLES III • D • G • REX • F • D • 50 PENCE
The initials stand for "DEI GRATIA REGINA FIDEI DEFENSOR", meaning "BY THE GRACE OF GOD, DEFENDER OF THE FAITH".
The reverse design is taken from the 1953 Coronation Crown. It shows a crown in the centre of an emblematical cross, formed from a thistle, rose, leek and shamrock. The four shields bear the arms of Scotland, England and Ireland. It was designed by artist, Edgar Fuller and modelled by sculptor, Cecil Thomas.
