This 2022 Platinum Jubilee Gold Bullion Quarter Sovereign, in a sleeve, commemorates Queen Elizabeth II's platinum jubilee and features Queen Elizabeth II's royal coat of arms, designed by Timothy Noad.
The Royal Mint started to produce bullion quarter sovereigns in 2009. They have a nominal face value of five shillings, or 25 new pence. The mint had considered introducing a quarter sovereign coin in 1853 and produced two patterns for it. The coin never went into production as it was decided that the coin would likely wear too quickly in circulation.
This special Royal Coat of Arms half sovereign has been issued to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. Elizabeth II ascended the British throne on 6th February 1952 after the sudden death of her father, King George VI. She was not officially crowned until 2nd June 1953. In 2022 Queen Elizabeth celebrated her Platinum Jubilee (70 years of service). She is the first British monarch to reach this milestone event.
The obverse of the 2022 quarter sovereign features the fifth coinage portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Jody Clark. The text reads:
· ELIZABETH II ∙ DEI ∙ GRA · REGINA ∙ FID ∙ DEF
The reverse was designed by heraldic artist, Timothy Noad, and features an interpretation of the Royal Coat of Arms. The arms consist of the quartered shield of the United Kingdom, surmounted by a royal crown, topped by a golden lion. The date appears at the bottom.
