The Coronation of King Charles III and Queen Consort Camilla was an event that captivated the attention of people throughout the UK and around the globe. The ceremony took place on May 6th, 2023, at Westminster Abbey in London.
A royal cypher holds great significance as it embodies a monogram comprising the initials of the monarch's name and title, accompanied by a visual representation of the crown. Notably, the reverse of the coin prominently displays the royal cypher of His Majesty King Charles III.
This emblem finds its place on official documents, coins, flags, and various other items closely linked to the monarchy, symbolising the authority and prestige of the reigning sovereign.
After the passing of Queen Elizabeth II on 8th September 2022, Martin Jennings sculpted and designed the new King Charles III definitive coinage portrait.
Furthermore, following his initial portrayal of His Majesty in the UK definitive coinage, he was once again commissioned to engrave the crowned coinage portrait design to commemorate the coronation of KCIII.
Jennings was born in 1957. He graduated from the University of Oxford in 1979, where he studied English Literature and Language. Afterwards, Jennings undertook a course in Lettering (1979-80).
John Bergdahl is a highly accomplished coin designer. His artistry have graced various coins, including those commemorating historical events, famous personalities, and iconic landmarks.
The obverse features the first crowned coinage portrait of King Charles III, facing left, engraved by Martin Jennings. The coin bears the following inscription:
CHARLES · III · D · G · REX · F · D · 2 POUNDS · 2023 ·
The reverse, designed by veteran coin designer John Bergdahl, displays a depiction of King Charles III's royal cypher, encircled by a wreath, accompanied by an inscription that reads as follows:
