A Mustang is a free-roaming horse native to the western United States, with roots tracing back to Spain. These horses were introduced to the Americas by Spanish conquistadors.
While some Mustangs retain characteristics of the original Colonial Spanish horses, others have evolved through breeding with other horse breeds, resulting in the modern mustang.
During the design stage of the logo for the Ford Mustang, the designers felt that the new car should embody the American spirit, and using the free-roaming horse as its symbol perfectly captured this idea.
The name "Ford Mustang" may have been inspired by the P-51 fighter plane or by the wild Mustang horses.
The Wild Free-Roaming Horse and Burro Act of 1971 is a US law protecting wild horses and burros on public lands. It ensures their preservation and management as living symbols of America’s heritage.
