Paris 2024 marks the centenary (100th anniversary) of the 1924 Summer Olympics in Paris and the first Winter Olympics in Chamonix, France, also in 1924. This will be the sixth time France has hosted the Olympic Games, with three Summer and three Winter Olympics, and it will be the first time since 1924 that the Summer Olympics return to Paris.
Similarly, to mark the centenary of the 1908 London Olympic Games, The Royal Mint issued the 2008 Olympic Centenary £2 coins, available in gold proof and silver proof editions.
The Paralympics originated in the United Kingdom, thanks to Dr. Ludwig Guttmann, a neurologist at Stoke Mandeville Hospital in Aylesbury, England. In 1948, Dr. Guttmann organised the Stoke Mandeville Games, a competition for World War II veterans with spinal cord injuries. This event is considered the forerunner to the Paralympic Games, which officially commenced in Rome in 1960.
Many may be surprised to learn that the small seaside resort of Blackpool is not only home to the iconic Blackpool Tower and Chards but also to legendary Olympic and Paralympic athletes who represented Team GB and went on to win medals.
