The 2025 Lion and Eagle 1 oz Gold Bullion Coin makes a grand return after the successful first release of this beloved series in 2024. This year, the design once again celebrates the historic collaboration between The Royal Mint and John M. Mercanti, the esteemed ex-chief engraver of the US Mint from 2006-2010.
Showcasing the iconic British lion and American eagle, this coin symbolises the enduring alliance between the United Kingdom and the United States. These instantly recognisable national symbols embody the shared values of courage, strength, and freedom, making this coin a must-have for collectors and investors with a British or American heritage.
Silver investors and stackers should not be disappointed, as we also have the 2025 Lion and Eagle 1 oz silver coin as well. You may also be interested in our range of CGT-exempt coins issued by The Royal Mint.
Chards is an official partner of The Royal Mint. The 2025 Lion and Eagle coin range, among other Royal Mint products, are sourced directly from their mint headquarters in Llantrisant, Wales.
On 5th March 1946, Prime Minister Winston Churchill introduced the term "special relationship" to describe the alliance between Great Britain and the United States. This unique bond began to develop in the early 20th century and was firmly established during the Second World War.
The phrase reflects the extraordinarily close ties shared by the UK and US across political, diplomatic, cultural, economic, military, and historical spheres.
John M. Mercanti, an accomplished American sculptor and engraver, served as the twelfth Chief Engraver of the United States Mint from 2006 until his retirement in 2010.
Mercanti is best known for creating the reverse design of the American Silver Eagle bullion coin, which featured on the series from its launch in 1986 until 2021. In recognition of his contributions to numismatics, Mercanti was named one of Coin World’s most influential figures in the field between 1960 and 2020.
The Lion and Eagle coins were not the only bullion coins created in collaboration between The Royal Mint and the US Mint. In the same year, the 2024 Britannia and Liberty coins were also introduced. These coins beautifully represent Lady Britannia and Liberty, symbolising the strength and freedom of both nations.
The obverse features the uncrowned portrait and first UK definitive coinage portrait of King Charles III designed by Martin Jennings. The inscription reads:
CHARLES III · D · G · REX · F · D · 100 POUNDS ·
The reverse design features the Lion and the Eagle seated side by side in commanding postures, both gazing to their left. The Lion’s paw extends beyond the central enclosed circle, creating a striking 3D effect that adds depth to the artwork. Encircling the design, the inscription reads as follows:
