Don Miguel Gregorio Antonio Ignacio Hidalgo y Costilla y Gallaga Mandarte Villaseñor was born on 8th May 1753, and died on 30th July 1811. He was also known as Cura Hidalgo ("Priest Hidalgo"). He was a Mexican Roman Catholic priest and revolutionary rebel leader, and often regarded as the founder of the Mexican War of Independence movement, standing against Spain in the early 19th century.
Although there were numerous earlier issues of diez (10) pesos, the Hidalgo type shown on this page was issued from 1905 to 1920 inclusive, although not in every year. It would seem that about 50,000 pieces were also struck in 1959, bearing that date, but from 1961 to 1972, approximately another million restrikes were also issued, and it is possible that they are still struck to order nowadays.
The obverse features the Mexican coat of arms, which consists of an eagle with a snake in its mouth, standing on a cactus. The text reads "ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS". This is Latin for "UNITED MEXICAN STATES".
The reverse shows a left-facing portrait of Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, with "DIEZ PESOS" on the left, and
"M * "YEAR"" on the right.
