1984 UK Coin £1 Silver Proof Scottish Thistle

This 1984 Scottish Thistle silver proof coin is the first in a series of four coins featuring a national plant of each of the four countries of Great Britain. This series was designed by Leslie Durbin, CBE.

Struck in 0.925 sterling silver, this proof coin comes in a presentation box with a certificate of authenticity.

1984 saw an innovation on United Kingdom pound coins. The nickel-brass pound had only been introduced in 1983, but it was decided to produce four different national reverse designs in a four year cycle, plus a "Royal" design in the fifth year.

The milled edge is stamped with the Llantrisant mint mark - a cross crosslet, and is inscribed with the motto of the Order of the Thistle. The Latin inscription is:

"NEMO ME IMPUNE LACESSIT"

This translates to "No-one provokes me with impunity".

On 28 March 2017, the circulated round pound was replaced by the 12 sided £1 coin. On the 15 October the round £1 coin will cease to be legal tender.
