What Is the Faerie Queene Poem?

The 'Faerie Queene' poem is an English work by Edmund Spenser, first published in 1590, which included books one to three. It was republished six years later with books IV to V, completing the epic poem that comprised of over 36,000 lines.

Today the 'Faerie Queene' can be read which consists of six distinct poems, each with its own narrative that follows the adventures of different knights, such as the Redcross Knight in Book 1.

Una and the Lion Significance in ‘The Faerie Queen' Poem

Lady Una is a fair maiden who loves the protagonist of the first book, the 'Redcross Knight,' whom she eventually marries. She is the daughter of the King and Queen of a kingdom situated nearby the Garden of Eden, before their castle is overthrown by a dragon.

An evil wizard named Archimago performs deception to trick the noble Redcross Knight into believing that Una has been unfaithful to him, causing him to leave her. Una is then left to undertake her quest to free her parents alone before meeting a lion which plans to kill her. However the lion identifies Una's beauty and innocence and decides to become the protector and companion of Una during her journey.

Sadly, the lion was ultimately slain by Sansloy while protecting Lady Una from harm caused by one of the three brothers: Sansfoy, Sansjoy, and Sansloy. Together, the three brothers opposed the Redcross Knight. After brother Sansfoy was slain, Sansloy and Sansjoy vowed to avenge him but were ultimately also slain in Book I of 'The Faerie Queen.'

Book I concludes with the Redcross Knight slaying the evil dragon and pledging to marry Una. However, before they can celebrate, Archimago returns and makes another attempt to deceive the Redcross Knight. This time, his lies fail, and he is ultimately imprisoned.

Obverse

The obverse showcases the legendary Una and Lion characters from 'The Faerie Queen' poem. Una can be seen holding onto a sceptre and orb in her hands, and the lion turned ally and protector of the young girl seated next to her. Additionally, the bar features a swirling pattern in the background.

Reverse
