1902 Gold Sovereign Edward VII London

Struck in the same year as his coronation, the 1902 gold sovereign coin exhibits a wonderfully detailed depiction of King Edward VII across the obverse. The reverse of the coin showcases the iconic work of Benedetto Pistrucci, Chief engraver to The Royal Mint and creative behind the St George and the Dragon design synonymous with coinage to this day.

Photographs shown may not be the actual coin and may differ in terms of grade, die numbers, design flaws and other minor details.

The first Edward VII coinage was issued in 1902 and due to the short length of his reign, his coins are very popular with coin collectors. The 1902 sovereign is struck in 22 carat gold and at the time had a value of one pound. Sovereigns in 1902 were issued in the Australian branch mints of Melbourne, Syndey and Perth as well as The Royal Mint in London.

Obverse

The obverse of the 1902 gold sovereign, designed by famed engraver, George William De Saulles, shows King Edward VII facing to the right. The engraver's initials DeS. appear below the truncation and the legend around the coin reads:

EDWARDVS VII D:G:BRITT:OMN:REX:F:D:IND:IMP:

Reverse

The reverse features Benedetto Pistrucci's St George & the Dragon design, which over the years has become synonymous with English coinage.
