1937 George VI Gold Proof Half Sovereign NGC PF64

This 1937 George VI Gold Proof Half Sovereign NGC PF64 features the iconic St George and the Dragon reverse by Benedetto Pistrucci.

This gold proof coin has been graded by the Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC) as PF-64.

1937 half sovereigns were only issued as part of the four coin gold George VI Coronation proof set, making it difficult to acquire them separately, as this would require splitting the 4-coin set. Only 5,501 sets were issued.

1937 Gold Proof Coin Sets

George VI half sovereigns were only minted in 1937, as part of the four coin gold proof set, issued to celebrate the coronation.

All four of the 1937 proof gold coins share the same design, although there are some slight differences in proportion and spacing of the motifs of the design relative to the complete flan. An observant collector may be able to tell the difference between photographs of all four coins.

Obverse

The obverse features a portrait of George VI. Designed by Humphrey Paget, it shows a left-facing portrait of the king, with the legend (inscription):

GEORGIVS (GEORGIUS) VI D : G : BR : OMN : REX F : D: IND : IMP.

Reverse

The reverse was designed by Benedetto Pistrucci. It features the iconic depiction of St. George, on horseback, killing a dragon. The date 1937 appears in the exergue, and the initials B.P. (for Benedetto Pistrucci) appears to the right.
