This 1937 George VI Gold Proof Sovereign has been graded by the Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC) as PF-64. It's worth noting the coins are also Ultra Cameo, meaning there's a high contrast between the matte and mirror finish on the design.
Struck by the Royal Mint, this gold sovereign features the iconic St George and the Dragon reverse by Benedetto Pistrucci.
1937 sovereigns were only issued as part of the four coin George VI Coronation gold proof set, making it difficult to acquire them separately, as this would require splitting the 4-coin set. With only 5,501 sets minted, these coins are highly scarce and sought-after.
1937 Gold Proof Coin Sets
George VI half sovereigns were only minted in 1937, as part of the four coin gold proof set, issued to celebrate the coronation.
All four of the 1937 proof gold coins share the same design, although there are some slight differences in proportion and spacing of the motifs of the design relative to the complete flan. An observant collector may be able to tell the difference between photographs of all four coins.
Humphrey Paget's portrait of George VI appears on the obverse of the coin. It shows a left-facing portrait of the king, with the legend (inscription):
GEORGIVS (GEORGIUS) VI D : G : BR : OMN : REX F : D: IND : IMP.
The reverse featured Benedetto Pistrucci's iconic depiction of St. George and the dragon. The date '1937' can be found in the exergue, with the initials B.P. (for Benedetto Pistrucci) to the right.
