The 2001 gold set is a set with a difference. It includes the £2 coin commemorating the centenary of the transmission of the first transatlantic telegraph by Guglielmo Marconi in 1901.

The gold sovereign sets of 1986 had also contained the Commonwealth Games design of £2, but the 1989 sovereign three-coin sets used their own exclusive Sovereign 500th Anniversary rather than the two different English and Scottish versions to commemorate the tercentenary of the Bill of Rights and the Claim of Right.
Obverse
The obverse bears the fourth portrait of Elizabeth II by Ian Rank-Broadley with the inscription ELIZABETH·II·DEI·GRA REGINA·FID·DEF.
Reverse
The £2 coin reverse features a design commemorating the centenary of the transmission of the first transatlantic telegraph by Guglielmo Marconi in 1901, instead of the more usual St. George and Dragon design which features on the sovereign and half sovereign.
