The 2007 Buffalo coin is struck in .9999 fineness, 24 carat gold.
This bullion coin is issued by the US Mint and contains one ounce of gold. The Buffalo bullion coin design was adapted from the historical Indian Head Nickel.
The gold Buffalo coin is issued by the United States Mint and has a denomination of US $50. Designed by American sculptor, James Earle Fraser, the coin features an Indian head on the obverse and an American buffalo on the reverse. The buffalo is said to be based upon "Black Diamond," a favourite attraction at the New York Zoological Gardens.
Buffalo coins are a popular alternative for investors in gold who are looking for someting different for their portfolio.
The obverse features an engraving by American sculptor, James Earle Fraser. The right facing Native American Indian is supposedly based on a combination of three Indian chiefs - Chief Iron Tail, Chief Two Moons and either Chief John Big Tree of the Onondaga tribe or John Two Guns, son of White Calf.
The coin bears the inscription LIBERTY, 2007 and F - the initial of the engraver Fraser.
The reverse features a left facing buffalo with the inscription:
UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, IN GOD WE TRUST
As well as:
$50 1OZ .9999 FINE GOLD
The Latin inscription E PLURIBUS UNUM translates to 'Out of many, one'. This is a traditional American motto which appears on the Great Seal of the United States.
