2020 Music Legends - Queen Half Ounce Silver Proof Coin. This coin is the first release in the Royal Mint's Music Legends series. The silver proof £1 coin celebrates the band Queen, who formed 50 years ago in 1970.
The design features a microphone, keyboard, bass guitar, drums and an electric guitar, paying homage to Freddie Mercury, Brian May, Roger Taylor and John Deacon.
The coin has a mintage of just 20,000 coins and a limited edition presentation of 17,500. It comes presented in a perspex block which is styled like a record.
The coin is available in various other size and finishes including a one ounce silver coin and a Brilliant Uncirculated £5. This 1oz silver proof version is the only one to have a coloured design.
Queen was formed in 1970 with Freddie Mercury on vocals, Brian May on guitar, John Deacon on bass guitar and Roger Taylor on drums. Known for their music videos, catchy songs and Mercury's eccentric stage performances, the band quickly became one of the biggest rock bands in the world and have sold an estimated 170 - 300 million albums.
This is the first release in the Music Legends series of coins from The Royal Mint. The series will celebrate British music royalty.
We first heard about the coin after the Privy Council published information about it. The Privy Council is made up of senior politicians who advise the Queen on such matters as bank holidays, coinage and lively company statuses. The Royal Mint have to submit any new coin designs to The Privy Council for approval and that information is then announced on the Privy Council website.
The obverse of the coins is the fifth coinage portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Jody Clark.
Designed by Chris Facey, the reverse features Freddie Mercury's grand piano, Roger Taylor's bass drum, Brian May's guitar and John Deacon's bass. The keys on the piano are pressed down in the opening notes of Bohemian Rhapsody.
