2021 Decimal Day - Strike on the Day Gold Proof 50 Pence Coin NGC PF 70 Ultra Cameo

This 2021 gold proof 50p coin was struck on 15 February 2021, 50 years after the UK decimalised its currency.

This "strike on the day" coin comes with its original certificate of authenticity.

The Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) has given this coin the highest possible grade of PF 70 Ultra Cameo. It's worth noting that these coins have been graded as ultra cameo, which means there is a high definition between the matte and mirror finish on the design.

Decimal Day

Decimal Day, the day in which the UK switched from £sd to decimal coinage, took place on 15th February 1971. The government prepared for the massive change by withdrawing some denominations of coins and notes prior to the 1971 launch day. They also introduced fifty pence coins a couple of years earlier, in 1969.

In order to acquaint the general public to the new denominations of coins, special packs were issued featuring the new half penny, penny, two pence, five pence and ten pence coins.

The Story of the 50 Pence

First issued in 1969, the 50 pence replaced the 10-shilling note becoming the third decimal coin introduced British currency.  Despite its introduction in the late 1960’s, the coins heritage can be traced far before this, with silver half pound coins being issued around 1559 and 1646, and the still popular today, half sovereign coming to fruition in 1544.

Obverse

The obverse features the Jody Clark coinage portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. This is the fifth portrait of the Queen to feature on UK coins.

Reverse

The reverse was designed by Royal Mint graphic designer, Dominique Evans. The design shows overlapping sections of the pre-decimal UK coins, including a florin (two shilling), shilling, sixpence, threepence, penny, half penny and farthing. The centre of the coin says:
