2021 Music Legends: The Who Two Ounce Silver Proof Coin
This 2 ounce silver coin is part of The Royal Mint's Music Legends Series. Only 550 of these The Who coins were issued.
The reverse of the coins feature a guitar-shaped pinball machine, adorned by a Union Jack flag. The mod 'The Who' logo appears at the top. Each of these coins is struck from 999 fine silver and contains two troy ounces of the precious metal.
The coin comes presented in a wooden box, with a booklet and numbered certificate of authenticity from The Royal Mint.
The Who formed in 1964 and became one of the most influential bands of the 20th century. Founding members Roger Daltrey, Pete Townshend and John Entwistle started out as The Detours and were already playing regular gigs around London before changing their name. They soon met drummer Keith Moon who was then part of a band called The Beachcombers. After playing just a few songs with The Who, they offered him the job as their drummer.
The Who found fame with "I Can't Explain" and "My Generation", but are just as well known for their rock operas "Tommy" and "Quadrophenia" which were turned into films in 1975 and 1979, respectively.
Daltrey and Townshend still continue to tour, despite the deaths of Moon and Entwistle and released their 12th album, simply titled "Who".
We first heard about the coin after the Privy Council published information about it. The Privy Council is made up of senior politicians who advise the Queen on such matters as bank holidays, coinage and lively company statuses. The Royal Mint have to submit any new coin designs to The Privy Council for approval and that information is then announced on the Privy Council website.
The obverse will feature an effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, with the following text:
2021 · ELIZABETH II · D · G · REG · F · D · 5 POUNDS ·
Designed by Henry Gray, the reverse features some of the most iconic symbols of the band. A Rickenbacker guitar-shaped pinball machine is shown smashing through a speaker. The guitar is adorned by a Union Jack flag. The round mod-style 'The Who' logo appears at the top of the coin.
