New Gold Sixpence Announced
Synopsis
A recent proclamation in The Gazette gives the specifications for two new sixpence coins.
Originally struck in silver, the sixpence was taken out of circulation following decimalisation in 1971.
Here, we look at what we can expect from the Mint’s future release.
Two New Gold Sixpence Coins
According to the proclamation, the new series of sixpence coins will be struck in gold and rose gold and will have the following specifications:
Sixpence Gold Coin
Struck in a fineness .999/24 carat gold with a standard weight of 6.19 grammes and a standard diameter of 19.41 millimetres.
The obverse of the coin will bear an effigy of Queen Elizabeth II and the inscription:
ELIZABETH II • DEI • GRA • REGINA • FID • DEF
The reverse will show the Royal Cypher wilth a floral motif and the inscription:
SIXPENCE • (YEAR)
The coins will have a grained edge.
Sixpence Rose Gold Coin
The rose gold sixpence will be struck in .916/22 carat gold, have a standard weight of 5.59 grammes, and a standard diameter of 19.41 millimetres.
The obverse of the coin will bear an effigy of Queen Elizabeth II and the inscription:
ELIZABETH II • DEI • GRA • REGINA • FID • DEF
The reverse will show the Royal Cypher wilth a floral motif and the inscription:
SIXPENCE • (YEAR)
The coins will have a grained edge.
