This 1959 Gold Full Sovereign Elizabeth II Coin has been graded by the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) and has been given the grade of MS 65 or "uncirculated" condition.
Struck in 22-carat / .917 fine gold, this coin contains 0.235 troy ounces of the precious metal.
Although Queen Elizabeth II was crowned in 1952, sovereigns bearing her portrait were not produced until 1957. Early dates featuring the Mary Gillick portrait are highly sought after.
Not every date exists for gold sovereigns. In fact, gold sovereigns were not issued for circulation after 1932, although, the Royal Mint resumed production in 1957 partly to meet world demand for gold bullion coins.
The only dates minted between 1932 and decimalisation were 1957 to 1959, and then 1962 to 1968. These dates all bear the first portrait of Queen Elizabeth II as used on almost all pre-decimal coins, with the familiar St. George & Dragon design on the reverse.
The obverse bears the first portrait of Queen Elizabeth II as designed by Mary Gillick. This portrait was used on sovereigns from 1957 to 1968.
The reverse bears the iconic portrait of St. George slaying the dragon as designed by Benedetto Pistrucci.
