Isle of Man Platinum Noble Coins come with a face value such as ONE NOBLE (and fractions of, for smaller sizes).
The Noble face value is said to represent whatever the intrinsic platinum content of the coin is, that is a one ounce Noble is equal to the spot price of a troy ounce of platinum.
The Isle of Man have produced a range of platinum coins called Nobles since 1983. The range of weights start at one twentieth of an ounce, and go up to ten ounces. They are not made every year in all sizes, the last one ounce size issued was in 1997.
The obverse shows Raphael Maklouf's portrait of Elizabeth II facing to the right, with the date below:
ISLE OF MAN ELIZABETH II 1988
The reverse design features a Viking ship. The reason behind this is that the original noble coins were produced back in the 14th century, under the reign of King Edward III. The design on the original coins shows King Edward III with a ship. The Pobjoy Mint chose the ship to honour the original design. The lettering reads:
1OZ PLATINUM FINE
