This is the 2021 Year of the Ox Half Ounce Silver Coin from Australia's Perth Mint. This is the second release in The Perth Mint's Lunar Series III Collection.
The coins are struck from 99.99% fine silver and contain 0.5 troy ounces (15.55 grams) of silver. Each coin comes in a protective capsule.
These coins have an unlimited mintage, meaning the mint will continue to produce them throughout 2021, after which they will declare the official mintage figures.
The Perth Mint introduced their lunar coin series in 1996. Each coin celebrates a different Chinese zodiac sign, with each cycle lasting 12 years. Since the coins were introduced they have proven to be highly collectable, with most sizes selling out quickly.
The Chinese lunar Year of the Ox begins on 12th February, 2021. The ox is the second animal in the lunar calendar, and those born under it are thought to be strong, determined and dependable.
Other year of the ox include 1961, 1973, 1985, 1997 and 2009.
The third series of lunar coins began with the 2020 Year of the Mouse coins. If you would like to start collecting we suggest you buy these first coins before it’s too late.
The silver Year of the Ox coins all feature a micro-engraved letter within the design. It’s only visible under a magnifying glass and gives buyers extra security when buying the coins.
The 2021 coin shows the Australian coinage portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, by Jody Clark. The design shows Elizabeth from the shoulders upwards.
