King Edward VII

King Edward VII was the King of Great Britain from 1901 –1910. Nicknamed ‘Bertie’, the king ascended the throne on 22 January 1901, after the death of his mother, Queen Victoria. At the time, Edward was the longest heir apparent in British history, having served over 59 years. This record was later beaten by King Charles III, who served over 70 years as heir apparent.

Edward was known as a peacemaker, and during his reign he improved relationships between Britain and France. He also helped modernise the military and navy, unbeknownst to him, preparing Britain for World War I.

Edward ruled from the house of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha. The family name was eventually changed by his son, King George V. After the outbreak of World War I, anti-German sentiment prompted the family to abandon their German names and adopt the new family name of Windsor.

He is the last British monarch to have a period named after him, the Edwardian Era.
