Celebrate 25 years of magic with these 2022 Harry Potter Silver Proof 50p Coins. Issued by the Royal Mint, these coloured 50p coins are the first release in a new four-coin Harry Potter series.
This silver coin features the wizard himself - the first time Harry Potter been featured on a UK coin. Artist Jim Kay, responsible for designing the fully illustrated editions of the Harry Potter books, lends his artwork to the design.
Each coin is struck in 925 sterling silver. The coins come beautifully presented in a box, along with a numbered certificate of authenticity and an informational booklet.
The coins have a mintage of 15,010 coins and a limited edition presentation of 15,000 coins.
The Royal Mint have confirmed the Harry Potter 50p coins will not enter circulation.
The series will feature four coins in total, with designs including Harry Potter, Albus Dumbledore, the Hogwarts Express, and Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
2022 marks 25 years since the first Harry Potter book, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, was published. The idea for the boy wizard was conceived by author, J. K. Rowling, who dreamt up the story whilst on a delayed train journey.
Rowling wrote the first novel in 1995, and, after being turned down by 12 publishers, it was finally published by Bloomsbury books in 1997. The book proved to be tremendously popular around the world, selling over 120 million copies.
The success has led to a further 6 Harry Potter books, 8 films, a 2-part play, the Fantastic Beasts spin-off series and even theme park rides!
The obverse bears the fifth coinage portrait of the late Queen Elizabeth II. This was designed by Jody Clark. The text reads:
2022 · ELIZABETH II · D · G · REG ·F · D · 50 PENCE ·
The reverse was designed by Royal Mint product designer, Ffion Gwillim. A depiction of Harry Potter by illustrator, Jim Kay, appears in the centre, with stars in the background. A latent image acts as a hologram and shows the number '25' and a lightening bold. The text reads:
