The first giant panda was discovered on April 1, 1869 in China (Sichuan) by Armand David a French priest. Due to the first Panda bear being found in China the Chinese Mint designed bullion coins that featured the panda.
The Chinese Bullion coin was first issued in 1982 and quickly gained popularity due to its high gold content, beautiful design, and the appeal of the panda motif. Each year the reverse design of the panda is changed, which makes the panda series more interesting to collectors.
From 1982 to 2000, inclusive, the 1/10 oz Gold Panda coins carried a denomination of 10 yuan. Starting in 2001, the denomination was changed to 50 yuan.
Gold pandas, manufactured between 1982 and 2015, were produced in five sizes ranging from one ounce to one-twentieth of an ounce. In some years, much larger sizes were issued, often in limited quantities.
Most major global mints issue coins in troy weights, however, the People's Bank of China have used metric weights since 2016. Demand for the Chinese Panda is not limited to the home market in China. Collectors eagerly await the release of Pandas each year and older issues are highly prized.
